I would also like to know the significance of Mr. Black, the old man that "always talked with exclamation points!!" That was a frustrating to read, what made the author put that in? Was it because the part with the birds, being extremely loud and incredibly close? Another thing I really dislike. When a little moment like that becomes the title of the book, if that is even the case. It just doesn't make sense!
Anyway.
Mr. Black, a man who is supposedly over 100 years old and hasn't been out of the house for years, decides to join Oskar in search of finding the source of the key? that seems a little strange to me, how one could be so willing to change for a little boy all of the sudden?
To end, it amazes me how Oskar is still going down the list in search of all the Blacks. No one has suggested him to go in order of location, because if that was the case imagine how many more he could have done by now. And how does his mom still not know about this? What does he think he's doing? It excites me that the book is coming to an end because all I'm really concerned about is him finding the source of the key. And if there's a reason for all those pages between the grandma and grandpa

Jack, I have some of the same questions as you have. I think that Mr. Black joined Oskar in his search for the key because he wanted to go on an adventure. He said that he had been to over 100 countries and he probably misses the adventures that he used to go on. Mr. Black was probably really happy when Oskar came to visit. He probably hadn't had a visitor in years so he was excited and used exclamation points after each sentence.

I think the significance of Mr. Black is that he represents a part of Oskar's life that he never even recognized. They had lived their whole lives completely unaware of each other's existence even though they were "incredibly close". I believe that Oskar will get a different perspective on the world through his search with Mr. Black.

ReplyDeleteI think all of Mr. Black's dialogue ends with exclamation points because everything he says is extremely loud since he can't hear himself. I noticed that at the end of the chapter, once Oskar turns on his hearing aid and he can finally hear himself, the last thing he says ("Ok") is without an exclamation point.
ReplyDeleteJack, I also found it a little bit strange that Mr. Black hasn't left his apartment for 24 years and then suddenly he decides to leave and help Oskar out. But I also agree with Eric that Mr. Black is looking for an adventure because of his history of traveling the world and for the last couple of years, he has been very lonely.
ReplyDeleteAbout the letters, my prediction (with no evidence to support it) is that Oskar will find the letters in whatever he opens with the key. Just a thought, but I guess we'll find out soon enough.

I believe that Mr. black joined Oskar in his search, to save himself from living the rest of his life alone in his apartment. It is clear that Mr. black needed a change because he was starting to go off the deep end. Oskar's adventure/mission is the perfect way for Mr. Black to get out of his apartment for a reason. The only reason that Mr. Black decided to get out of his apartment was because he had a cause that was pushing him. Mr. Black only stayed in his apartment for so long because he had no reason to leave.
