Does Oskar truly believe that his father is dead? Similarly, what does he expect at the end of his search: a prize hidden by his father, or his father himself?
I believe that Oskar knows his father is dead and doesn't question the possibility of him being alive. He is searching for a final message from his father to bring closure on his death. After the message is revealed, Oskar believes he will be able to cope better.
I think he does. I just think he believes his father had a secret, a secret he left specifically for Oskar when he left, now he's trying to find it. I think he expects to find an explanation. While I can't fully justify my thoughts right now, I'm pretty positive he knows it will answer all his questions of who his father (maybe even broader than that) was and why he left.
I believe that half of Oskar believes that his father is still alive and everything is just like a dream, but the other half accepts the fate of his father. The search is probably more of a tribute to his father rather than a final desperate hope that he is still alive. Completing the search is a way to complete one of the last tasks his father had presented him. At the end of the search, there will most likely be something surprising, but almost definitely not his father.
