The book so far is a compelling, unique read that really took me a while to wrap my head around. But I am really enjoying it, although the feeling changes rapidly throughout the story. I couldn't stop laughing through the first 15 pages, but now after completing the first section it is getting more depressing and repetitive. I'm very interested in the way Oskar thinks and I believe the author did a great job of just describing what he's thinking at all times. Oskar has an incredible imagination, and has many great "inventions" literally every other page. I still don't quite understand the significance of the pictures and if they really all have some certain meaning, and why there is a picture if a door on the first page and on page 29.
The only other thing that I'm excited and also worried to read more about is the game that Oskar is playing in trying to find his father or what his "black key" goes to. I'm impressed that it has gone this far and I hope that it keeps going and he somehow finds another clue, but also the father has passed away and Oskar might be getting his hopes for nothing. So I have realized on a personal standpoint that some of these are difficult to comment on, and I also think it would be cool for my post to be the most popular, please feel free to give me general feedback or help clarify for me the significance of some pictures for me.

Jack, I am impressed with your analysis. I enjoyed your critique and how it beautifully accented your compliments of the author's strong points. I must agree that the story has taken a turn away from the humor, yet still retains the attention of the reader. Oskar is very silly, smart, and charismatic. He is a good narrator, as he is very observant of the world and the people around him, but he is also entertaining. He is never boring. I'm sure his journey will be an exciting one, and I look forward to following it with you.
ReplyDeleteThe author seemed to use humor in the first part to draw in the reader and give a little taste of how Oskar thought, so that you could adjust a bit before jumping in, head first. I think that the pictures show how things connect and where things are going, maybe? Honestly, it's a shot in the dark from where i sit.
ReplyDeleteI would be very surprised if Oskar solves the scavenger hunt. I don't believe that because he is not smart enough, but only because I believe that one of the clues will lead to a dead end. I find it improbable that his father finished creating the game before he died. I guess we will just have to find out.
ReplyDeleteI was also a little confused on the significance of some of the pictures. I also agree that the scavenger hunt that Oskar is going on to find the key might disappoint him in the end. When his dad was alive, all the puzzles that his dad showed to him, he was able to solve. Although, this puzzle seems very broad and he doesn't have a lot of information about the key, so I feel like he is going to get his hopes up for nothing and be very disappointed in the end.
