Ashley #2
Oskar always has raisons d'etre based on his mother, but yet seems so distant from her. He feels as if she doesn't understand him, and that she isn't showing enough emotion towards his father's death, but fails to see her constant attempts at their relationship. Oskar obviously does care a great amount for his mother, or else he wouldn't have so many reasons to be about her, and he wouldn't feel so incredibly guilty for lying to her all of the time. When will Oskar finally open up to his mother and fix the issues he has with her? When will he finally be able to show her the messages? The messages could be what mends their relationship.

I feel like someone, especially a parent, could give a person a "reason to exist" even if the two don't necessarily have the best relationship. I don't think Oskar and his mother have the capability of mending their relationship at this point in the book. Oskar is too busy searching for the answers to the key mystery and frustrated with his mother for not grieving over his father's death the way he is. I agree though - I feel like him keeping the messages away from her only pushes them further apart. The less they hide from each other, the closer they'll become.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kali. Oskar is too busy trying to solve the try mystery to be with his own mother. Also, whenever Oskar goes out to look for answers about the key, he barely says any words to his mother about what he is doing or where he is going, and she doesn't seem to ask. This makes their relationship more distant. Oskar and his mom grieve differently, so they aren't becoming closer from grieving about the loss of Oskar's father together. I agree that if they try to understand each other more and talk to each other more, they will be able to build a closer relationship.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Rhiannon. As Oskar has immersed himself in the finding answers about the key, he is distancing himself from his mother. I don't believe that he will show her the messages. He said that he is trying to protect her but I don't believe that is fully true. By hiding the messages, I believe that he is trying to cover up his guilt.
