Part 2
This second section of reading included a lot of the letter from the grandfather. This entire section was very interesting. It also confused me. I really want to know why the grandfather can't or doesn't talk. But the way he and his wife communicate is intriguing. It shows what a unique bond the two of them have. I wonder if the wife really can understand everything the grandfather is trying to say. Also, when the grandmother showed her husband her life story that she wrote, I found it extremely sad that the pages were blank. Just to clarify: the grandfather had messed something up with the typewriter, so it didn't work. But the grandmother's vision was bad so she couldn't tell that she hadn't written anything? This made me sad. I also don't really understand why the grandfather left. Was it simply because he was unhappy with his life? Will he find someone else with whom he can communicate through gestures?
I think that he left because he knew it wasn't fair to the grandma that he wished she was her sister, Anna. I also believe that through his quote about wishing he had two lives (for more opportunities) he shows he did not feel satisfied and didn't want to waste his life away knowing there could be more out there for him. His talking issue probably strained their relationship.
ReplyDeleteI agree that he must have left due to still having feelings for Anna. He realized he was just hurting the grandma and left for both his and her own benefit. I also found it extremely sad when she had no idea that she hadn't actually written the story she had been working so hard on.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the grandfather will find someone else, unless it is Anna. His heart seems to only be for her, no matter how hard he tries to deny that.
I agree with both Kate and Jenae. The grandfather is still completely in love with Anna, and he was hoping that her sister would be just like her when they got married. But as they have lived together, he realizes that she isn't the same as Anna, making him sad and unsatisfied. I also agree that the grandfather felt that it wasn't fair to Anna's sister to stay around if he truly didn't love her.
ReplyDeletePerhaps that was the moment the grandfather realized how futile it was for a mute and someone who is mostly blind to be in a strong relationship together. Because of this, he scared himself and left impulsively. It was likely for the better due to their disabilities making it so hard for them to communicate.
