This book is different from any other book that I have read. It is depressing, yet it has comical moments. I found Oskar's story being very sad. His father passed away but he still has difficulty comprehending what happened. He obviously doesn't lack mental capacity, but he has difficulty coping with his emotions. The only ways that he knows how to deal with his emotions is injuring himself or making jokes, " I kicked a French chicken in the stomach once... it said, 'Oeuf.'"(6). Oskar will finally receive closure of his father's death when his finishes the final scavenger hunt that his dad gave to him.

I dont know if Oskar will actually find closure. I don't even know if closure really exists when its for the death of a loved one.
ReplyDeleteEric, you are correct in the statement that this story is in fact very unique. Oskar is a unique boy, in a good way, and his story will be interesting throughout. Closure is his final goal, but it's never about the destination. It's about the journey. [deep]
ReplyDeleteI think that the scavenger hunt will help Oskar to direct his pain and sadness away from destructive behavior and will allow him to cope with his great loss. It is true that the pain of his father's death will never be gone, but the scavenger hunt will help him come to terms with the reality he is faced with.
ReplyDeleteI also believe that Oskar occasionally uses humor to cope, even when it seems an inappropriate time for him to do so. At first i think it seemed as if he didn't care very much about the funeral due to the fact that he was joking around and taking the situation lightly, but as the book progressed, you get to see how deeply his fathers death is affecting him and the negative impact the loss is having on his life. Oskar may or may not be successful with the scavenger hunt, but I sure hope he finds the closure he is looking for.
ReplyDeleteEric, you stated that Oscar doesn't have an issue with mental capacity. I absolutely agree with you on this point. His extensive knowledge on topics such as Steven Hawking and Mathematics shows that he has no problem with containing knowledge. I believe that his problem exists only because he has a issue with focusing on his thoughts and focusing on the information that he takes in. It is very common for autistic children to be strong in topics such as math and puzzles. Because Oscar has trouble focusing his thoughts, he can't see the big picture. This is prevalent when he is trying to narrow down the locks that his fathers key could be for. Instead of trying locks that would be reasonable according to his fathers interests; Oscar believes that he needs to try every lock in New York City.
